The 80s return for a cameo this week on The Plotaholics Podcast! This week, Shane and Bryan take on the John Hughes (classic?), Weird Science–starring Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, and Robert Downey Jr!
Join us as we discuss this lopsided film from the Shermer, Illinois Series– a film that feels incredibly out-of-place with the other entries in the Hughesiverse.
Ok. Hold up. I do agree with your plethora of points about the shortcomings of Weird Science. However, I am in violent disagreement with your expectations. I die watch it as a kid, loved it, and watched it again in my adulthood because I couldn’t resist. It’s supposed to he completely 80s. Including the blues club scene and the quote, unquote treatment of women. It’s absurd. It’s ridiculous. And it’s totally 80s. Plot holes are allowed.
Peace out

I totally understand. But aren’t there other movies that are 100% 80s that do a good job of the peripheral stuff too? I don’t know. I think my expectations are fair. That doesn’t mean the movie isn’t fun from a certain perspective. It’s just…not very good.
Still, thanks for listening 🙂 Part of the fun of art is the different feelings it dredges up in us and the conversations we get to have as a result. 🙂

Thanks for a great podcast. You had me laughing out loud. I’ve pocketed the movie as fun, never expecting it to be good.

I am so glad you enjoyed yourself. We can all get protective of our favorites. I mean…I love some truly shitty movies, so I’m as bad as anybody else. Haha!
Thanks for coming by. We have a good time with these movies, and it’s always good to find someone that is willing to talk back 🙂
