The short answer, unfortunately, is that Quibi is set to become another streaming service.
What makes this streaming service different from the already-established stable (Hulu, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, AppleTV+, etc.) and already-announced forthcoming services (Peacock, HBOMax, etc.)? Reportedly, Quibi will be a streaming service exclusive to mobile devices–phones and tablets.
According to Quibi chairman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, the content on Quibi will be presented in “Chapters” of ten minutes or less, and it will be designed specifically for mobile viewing. This means that viewers will be able to view content horizontally (aka the “right” way) or vertically. Viewers will be able to change between the different viewing options while watching, if that’s something that appeals to you.
Quibi is set to launch in April 2020, so the service is still announcing the various types of content that will be available at launch. Over the summer, Plotaholics LIVE reported that Stephen Spielberg was developing a horror anthology series that would only be available to stream at night. We were unsure where that series would be available, but we can now report that the Spielberg series, Spielberg’s After Dark, will air exclusively on Quibi.
Other Quibi content includes the much-hyped Reno 911! revival featuring the original cast, a Judge Judy-inspired court show featuring Chrissy Teigen (Chrissy’s Court), a Zac Efron (and brother) survival show called Kill the Efrons, a reboot of the popular 1993 film, The Fugitive, and a bunch of other stuff.
The company has reportedly raised over $1 billion in investor commitments, including all major studios in Hollywood (so, yes, Disney owns a piece of this pie, too).
The service will reportedly cost users $4.99 for the as-supported version and $7.99 for the version with no ads.
So what do you think? Is the future of television smaller, bite-sized chunks of entertainment screened exclusively on a smaller screen? Sound off!
Speaking of entertainment available on the small screen, The Plotaholics will be hosting a special edition of Plotaholics LIVE on Saturday (12/14) at noon EST. We will be discussing the road to Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker including the entire cinematic history of the franchise. Set your YouTube reminder here or RSVP to the Facebook event here. We will be joined by friend of the show and honorary third Plotaholic, Joe Compton of GoIndieNow.
